This sounds awfully like a sideways admission of involvement in Israel’s rapidly failing attack on Lebanon:
U.S. President George W. Bush on Saturday cast the Lebanon war as part of a broader struggle against terrorism and said a strategy to end the violence there must address the threat posed by Hizbollah.
If so it is one more acknowledgement of the bankruptcy of strategy in the ‘war on terror, illustrated from some more story leads:
The ill-founded Somali strategy looks destined to develop another terrorist stronghold.
The killers of a Somali minister had links with foreign terrorism networks seeking to foment chaos in the violence-plagued Horn of Africa nation, Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi said on Saturday.
Who is Bin Laden, who cares? The attack on Lebanon has spawned a new pin up for radical Islamists.
To Arabs, he's the new Nasser, but to the West he has become the new Bin Laden
Even his mortal enemies admire his charisma, but Israel knows it must kill Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah if it is to claim victory in southern Lebanon. First, however, it has to find him
But this article is really worth a read. Look into the mind and the strategy of Hezbollah.
Inside a well-furnished apartment in a village on the outskirts of Tyre, with shelves of books piled from floor to ceiling, a black turbaned cleric and three men sit sipping bitter coffee. By the door is a pile of Kalashnikovs and ammunition boxes; handguns are tucked into the men's trousers. The four are Hizbullah fighters, waiting for the Israelis.
The final para of that story is chilling, and underlines why a wholesale attack on Lebanese civilians was strategic madness:
And even when the battle with the Israelis is over, he adds menacingly, Hizbullah will have other battles to fight. "The real battle is after the end of this war. We will have to settle score with the Lebanese politicians. We also have the best security and intelligence apparatus in this country, and we can reach any of those people who are speaking against us now. Let's finish with the Israelis and then we will settle scores later."
It should be noted that these bits are all taken from conservative or middle of the road media outlets.

This talk of supporting the Lebanese army so they can "go south and protect their border" by Bush and Blair has me a little confused. Is the Lebanese army to fight through Hezbollah and then beat back the Israelis?
They never really said it in such terms but essentially the "plan" is to resart the civil war with a mulitnational force siding with the Lebanon government.
Is that what they are suggesting? I'm really a little confused here.
Given the way information is coming out in disjointed bits, I’m not sure of where it is going. But the scary part is that I don’t think the strategists do either,
My best guess is that the likes of Bush and Blair are floating ideas and waiting for the world community to react.
I was gobsmaked to see Bush virtually admit involvement in Israel's insanity. I still see it as the US unleashing their junkyard dog, without thinking it through properly.
I wish we had a leader in the UnitedStates who didn't think all Islamic extremists were the same. Why he would think that the Shia Hezbollah and the Sunni Al Qaeda would be necessarily on the same side is beyond me.
I know subtlety is not a strong point in the American culture, but for the love of christ, these murderous bastards - the Islamists - would be just as happy tearing each other apart.
True the Bush agenda created the fertile ground for that to happen, which is bad enough. Not to recognise the potential for strategic manipulation of that situation shows how far they planners are off target.
A bloodyminded thought, I know, but possibly consistent with the agenda. Bush and co are simply floundering now, in a mess they created and can’t fathom.
Let's finish with the Israelis...
???
This Hezbollite doesn't get it. The Israelis are about to finish him and his buddies, even if they have to kill every last man, woman, and child in Lebanon to do it.
It seems like no one really gets it. But I'm sure not many would opt to change chairs with the Lebanese.
A really bloody day today in Lebanon. The Israelis have officially lost the propaganda war, I think. Since the U.S. is arming the Israelis, helping out w/ satellite-spotting, and encouraging them to keep up the bombing, I think it means we're fucked too.
I am trying to get up te enthusiasm to share some fascinating insights into those events.
I'm relegated to the old Mac G3 today, and OS 8 doesn't support much :(
Leter...
