Bert and Socks, no surrender

A British MP apologised to a member of a ferret club yesterday after his Jack Russell savaged her polecat to death in front of crowds at a county show.

Andrew Turner, the Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight, was walking around the island's annual show when his nine-year-old terrier, Bert, caught sight of Socks, a four-year-old polecat, which was being exercised on a harness.

The dog sank its teeth into the polecat and it took four people and a bucket of cold water to force him to loosen his grip. By then it was too late to save Socks and he was put down by the show's vet.

Bert's fall from grace is a blow to the terrier world after his triumph at the showground in 2004 when he won a terrier racing competition.

An official spokesman for polecats said, on condition of anonymity; this will bring the whole feline universe together to destroy dogs everywhere.

Okay, so I added the last bit, and the polecat didn't think it was very funny. But the rest of the story is at: Tory MP's Jack Russell shakes polecat to death in front of show crowd

Don't they have leash laws in Britain? Or, are they like Americans and think that only other people's dogs need to be on a leash.

The dawg was on a leash, the MP was too weak to hold it. Now there is probably a moral in that.
