School kids enlisted in drug war

AFGHANISTAN: Schoolchildren are being used as cheap labour, in an effort to reduce opium poppy cultivation. But it is a dangerous and ineffective approach, according to reports.

After decades of war and years of drought, poppy production is seen by many Afghan farmers as the only way to provide their families with food and shelter.

Authorities, keen to curb the illicit crop, are using school children to flatten the poppies before harvest time.
