Bits I couldn't pass up

I regularly scan world media for story leads. They aren’t always useful to me, but just sometimes they are too good to pass by.

The Brit papers are by far the best, with Aussie rags coming in second. This lot is all Brit:

More overweight than under-fed

Overweight overtake the hungry

The number of overweight people in the world has overtaken the number of malnourished for the first time, with a billion people considered heavier than advised.

While almost one in six of the estimated world population of 6.5 billion is now overweight or obese, about 800 million people do not have enough to eat, an international conference in Australia was told yesterday.

"The reality is that globally far more obesity than under-nutrition exists," said Prof Barry Popkin, a nutritionist from the University of North Carolina.

Soldier granted posthumous pardon

'Pte Farr suffered from shellshock, not cowardice'.

A soldier who was shot for cowardice during the First World War is to be granted a pardon, his family has announced tonight.

Private Harry Farr was 25 years old when he was executed after refusing to fight, but relatives have always claimed that he was suffering from shellshock at the time.

Youngster boards plane unchecked at height of terror alert

A top level security probe is underway after a 12-year-old boy walked onto a plane unchecked with no documents at the height of the terror scare. The boy boarded a plane at Gatwick on Monday despite airport security being on red-alert

'Airport profiling will make travelling while Asian an offence'

The Government was warned today it risked alienating the Muslim community over reported plans to introduce airport security screening on ethnic and religious grounds.

Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Ali Dizaei said tougher checks based on ethnicity and religious background would create a new offence of "travelling whilst Asian".

They have considered something like that in L.A. The crime would be DWA: Driving While Asian.

I think we should have something similar to DWA for government officials - GWD: Governing Whle Dumb. That would be an impeachable offense in Bush's case.

I was most struck by the number of overweight people surpassing the number of malnourished people for the first time. That's really something.

rbe, that kept catching my eye over a couple of days. Wasn't sure what to do with it. But then all thos other oddities...
I note that Britian is now going to pardon hundreds of WW1 soldiers who were shot for cowadice.
Call it the Aussie black humour, but these perverse stories really tickle me.
The fat thing is just plain mind blowing. But then I'm told I could be used as a pull through for a .22 rifle :)

About the pardons: better 100 years later than never, huh?
The pardons are really stupid, in my opinion.

Rom, I don't know how you restrained yourself. Very well put :)
