Where patriotism is a one liner

When you have to suffer a view like this every morning, where four seasons are words rather than events, where we thing it normal to have a leader called Kevin, a sense of humour is essential.

So here is one offering for Australia Day: From How do you tell if you are a true Aussie?

  • You know the meaning of the word "girt".
  • You believe that stubbies can be either drunk or worn.
  • You've made a bong out of your garden hose rather than use it for something illegal such as watering the garden.
  • You believe it is appropriate to put a rubber in your son's pencil case when he first attends school.
  • You can translate: "Dazza and Shazza played Acca Dacca on the way to Maccas."

There is a long list, if you think you can take more. Oh! And I’m always willing to try and translate.

A lot of us Northern Hemisphere types wouldn't mind a view like that in mid-January.

Hope you had a great Australia Day.

abi, it is great any month here. Well, the climate and view at least.
There is a push now for Australia week, I'm not sure why, it already is...

That list had me shaking my head. Is there no translation to help out those poor deprived souls who only speak murikan?

Girt? Stubbies? ok, bong I got & esp know about water rationing. rubber, ditto (once had to order a gross of them for an english client). From the link: Hey, I knew Mel-bin, score! and Ugh Boots are popular here as well, I just saw a young girl at my dentist wearing knee-high ughs with short-shorts (temp outside=low-40'sF).

And oh how true, about natives not knowing most of the things that are required for immigrants to attain citizenship. I guess that means there's no hope for all us U.S.ers when we finally decide to give up & migrate south to 'stralya. 'Course if you're smart, you'll already have figured out how to keep us out.

d.k. I'm sure you understand most and could fudge the citizenship test with no worries.
I might just clarify stubbies are a form of elastic wasted mens short and small bottles of beer.
Girt is my favourite - first verse of the Aust anthem - referring to our land being girt by sea - surrounded we suspect.
But I'll coach you anyway, now worries...

geez, Cart. These had me flashing back to the opening minutes of the movie "Atonement" whilst ruing I hadn't realized this was an English movie sans closed captioning.

(I think I made 0 for 0 of these.)

Oh, and BTW, congrats on "a man named Kevin" I think it shows how much further along Aussies are, i.e., America just isn't ready for "a man named Dennis" .. not yet (probably not ever).

Hope you're having a great A Day Holiday!

dad, strangely I keep getting hits on "Dazza and Shazza played Acca Dacca on the way to Maccas." i guess for a translation:
Darren and Sharon played AC/DC on the way to some fast food restaurant.

The Kevin thing is fascinating, but I doubt I will make PM with Dennis as a handle :( Hey, what am I worried about? Who would really want to be PM?
